Mondrian is one of my favorite hotels in Los Angeles. Surreal and baroque furniture pieces are displayed from the lobby to the rooms, walking through feels like visiting a contemporary art exhibition. Originally created by iconic designer Philip Starck in the mid-1990s. The design unites a quintessentially Californian embrace of nature, the outdoors, and the casual with the West Hollywood tradition of glamour and fantasy. The entrance is not exactly just another entrance but actually thirty-foot mahogany doors to give a pleasant dramatic touch to the hotel. Recently rejuvenated by visionary designer Benjamin Noriega Ortiz. When you get inside your room, the fun is everywhere, a black plastic hand in a mirror tray, pivoting full-circle to reveal framed, flat-screen televisions on the opposite side… Each of the hotel’s 237 rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows with stunning views of Sunset Boulevard and Downtown Los Angeles.
If you like to play in the shower, there are several options… I have never seen such a huge shower spot, which consists of two pommels -spacious enough to invite some friends for a group shower. In case you just want to watch you can lie down on the king size bed and open the curtain and you’ll have a splendid view of your friends. After a long night of experimental shower games you can enjoy your breakfast down on the terrace in the sun next to the swimming pool or you can have a more discrete breakfast under the shade of the arched mini-trees -either way you’ll have panoramic views of Los Angeles while enjoying a delicious omelette. An exquisite hotel experience for contemporary art lovers.
