Travelers to Amsterdam seeking a property as elegant as the city itself would be wise to consider Hotel De L’Europe.

First opened in 1895, the hotel underwent a massive renovation last year in an effort to combine its centuries-old architectural tradition with cutting-edge comforts and design. Reopened in the spring of 2011, the newly refurbished hotel is now fully available to visitors, including a new Dutch Masters Wing—a collection of 23 suites, each of which includes a replica painting from the nearby Rijksmuseum National Gallery.

The hotel offers seven different room styles. Some have been set up much like a high-end loft apartment, while others include sliding glass doors that separate the bedroom, living room and entryway.

Each room includes such elements as a Nespresso espresso coffee maker, mini bar, Bulgari bath accessories and flatscreen LCD TV with DVD player, as well as a CD player/radio with iPod docking station.

Guests can also take a dip in the Hotel De L’Europe’s heated indoor pool, enjoying views of the nearby Amstel River while swimming or relaxing on lounge chairs with a drink from the adjacent juice bar in hand. Steam and sauna facilities are available for those looking for a more deep relaxation and a full spa is in development, to be opened in the fall of 2011.

But what really sets Hotel De L’Europe apart may be its dining. Boasting six restaurants and bars overseen by executive chef Richard van Oostenbrugge, each provides a unique dining experience. The newly opened Bord’Eau, with a salon-like atmosphere, creates a stylish experience with a menu of top-notch French and Dutch dishes.

Freddy’s Bar offers a place for the elite to enjoy a drink (it is believed to offer the city’s best Bloody Mary). To give one a sense of the bar’s clientele, it is named after Alfred Heineken, who entertained guests there and even donated several paintings that hang on the bar’s walls.

Among the hotel’s other culinary offerings are Hoofdstad Brasserie, an open-kitchen restaurant serving modern continental cuisine; Promenade, offering an extensive list of old- and new-world wines; Het Terras, a café offering an open-air patio that’s perfect for warm weather; and Les Caves De L’Europe, the hotel’s private wine cellar where its selection of more than 1,000 wines are stored.
