To celebrate some pre-Halloween festivities, the Montalbán theater in Hollywood, California invited special guests for a special evening of “Fright Night.” I was fortunate to experience this surprise horror movie premiere screening like no other before. There were refreshments galore and humorous and horrific actors scurrying throughout the theater. The surprise horror movie premiere at the rumored to be haunted Montalbán theater was, “The House of the Devil,” directed by Ti West.

As my friend and I entered the Montalbán theater, we were welcomed with popcorn, Red Bulls, Izze Sparkling Juices, and a fine selection of candy. Most guests were dressed up in the requested turn of the century attire with the colors of red, white, and black. Then, a packed house was scared and humored by amazing actors. One actress named “Annette the Chippette,” who was a half chipmunk and half female human, humored my lovely guest with her interesting upbringing and funny stories of the adventures of being such an odd creature. Annette the Chippette stated, “We should embrace people who are different.” Then, as the lights dimmed before the surprise film started, a musician played eerie flute sounds. The

curtains opened and two aerial artists displayed wonderful trapeze skills. From a fantastic tightrope show to a bizarre coupled dance, they danced in a much more creepy fashion then our typical dance television shows like “Dancing with the Stars.”

The film was revealed to be Ti West’s’, “The House of the Devil.” This frightening horror film was in my opinion excellent and can be compared to more realistic horror classics like “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist.” The awesome cinematography and horrific sounds throughout the film kept my friend and I on the edge of our seats. The New York Times stated, “After years of vivisectionist splatter, here is a horror movie with real shivers.” Ti West created a nostalgic setting, which makes the typical viewer such as myself think that the movie was filmed during the 1980s. However, it is a new and terrifying horror film created with an indie budget and is a great movie to see during the Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos holidays. Overall, the experience that the Montalbán theater presented and the Q/A with Ti West after the film made this experience one never to forget during one of my favorite holidays. Go see House of the Devil with your girlfriend, boyfriend, family, and friends and you will be extremely frightened with this sinister, disturbing, and soon to be horror classic film.
