A gastro pub is a British term combining gastronomy and “public house”, stepping it up a couple notches above a basic pub that serves plain old “pub grub”. The concept of the gastro pub has been popular in Europe (especially Great Britain) for many years by offering customers the traditional pub experience mixed with quality dining. You won’t hear a microwave “ping” sound at any proper gastro pub. BoHo is the only gastro pub restaurant in Los Angeles. Located on the bustling Sunset Blvd in between Arc Light Theatres and Amoeba Records, the restaurant’s namesake is short for “Bohemian Hollywood” giving a nod to its European ancestors.
Sympathetically designed to retain the original character of a British gastro pub, Boho features classic yet quirky furnishings to ensure an intelligent and relaxed feel. A random piano is thrown in the middle of a two-seater table, brown leather booths with distressed wooden tables and bar, kitchy framed art, and mismatched vintage chairs of all kinds (velvet, leather, wooden) are thrown into the mix.
The food and beer are fabulous with a wide selection of brews from Belgium, Germany, and England to Oregon, Vermont and California. A pint of Old Speckled Hen (straight from the tap), a cream ale from England is the perfect start with its rich taste with sweet-ish undertones. The menu created by chef Andre Guerrero features a selection of artisanal “BOHO pizzas” as well as classics such as the “BOHO Burger”. The Fried Po’ Boy sliders are to die for and go great with the aforementioned Old Speckled Hen. There is a mini selection of tapas style “small plates” which feature a wide range of world cuisine such as Belgian fries with aioli dip or the Hummus with white anchovies. You can see hints of Guerrero’s latin influence in dishes such as the heirloom gazpacho soup and the Burrata salad. Everything is cooked to perfection and Boho is sure to be a staple in the Los Angeles dining and pub scene in the coming years.
