At Ognisko, owner Jan Woroniecki (who is also the owner of Eastern European style Baltic Restaurant located at South Bank) set out to offer Old Polish cuisine meets the whole world in the wine list with an elegant backdrop. Located on the ground floor of the beautiful building that is the home to the Ognisko Polskie club on Exhibition Road, South Kensington, the bar and restaurant are open to the public for lunch and dinner seven days a week. There is also a large terrace overlooking communal gardens that will be open for dining during the summer months.
The menu is reasonably priced for this upscale restaurant. Good starter selections include a selection of Polish Charcuterie, Lamb Meatballs or the delicious fried Kopytka dumplings. Before moving on to the main course you can enjoy an intermezzo of caviar blinis with a choice of the lower priced marinated herring or Keta caviar which run from £6 to £10 or the Royal Belgian Oscietra Caviar which runs from £55 to £85. These of course will need to be paired with a few premium Vodka shots to cleanse the palate between tastings.
On to the main course you’ll see the Eastern European with clear Mediterranean influenced Char-grilled Leg of Lamb with Aubergine, Pepper compote and Garlic Yoghurt, which you may wish to pair with a Pinot Grigio Il Palú or a Grüner Veltliner Von den Terrassen. Or you may want to go the fish route with the delectable Pan-fried Hake with Kasza, Peas, Beans & Chives and Poached Egg. You can end your meal with a sweet desert of (the highly recommended) Babu au Rhum with Chantilly Cream, pairs nicely with a sweet wine or on its own.
