Bar Boulud at Mandarin Oriental – London

Posted on 23 March 2011

Celebrated chef Daniel Boulud has finally brought his take on French cuisine to the UK. Bar Boulud, London, a new French bistro and wine bar located in the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, opened in May offers guests a full menu, inspired design and extensive wine list.

The restaurant design, conceived by Adam Tihany, aims for the look of a contemporary wine cellar, combining vaulted ceilings and custom chandeliers (evoking the metal rings from wine barrels), with an emphasis on classic materials like cork, zinc, leather and wood. The restaurant consists of two large connecting rooms—a bar dominated by a striking zinc-topped bar with a cork panel front, and a dining room set as a functional open kitchen space, complete with long glass counter for showcasing Bar Baoulud’s signature charcuterie and cheese. Visitors can watch the chefs at work as they wait for their meal, and a pair of private rooms seating 16 people each allow for a more intimate experience.

Wine and wine making plays a crucial role in the restaurant beyond the photographs of famed Lyon bistros and brasseries that accent the walls, taken by Blaise Adilon. Bar Boulud, London’s wine cellar focuses on Chef Boulud’s favorite wine making regions of France’s Rhone Valley and Burgundy. Overseen by sommelier David Vareille, these consist largely of wines from the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes for Burgundy and Syrah and Grenache for the Rhone Valley reds, and Viognier Marsanne and Rousanne for the whites. As it is in London, the restaurant also offers a curated selection of craft beers, several available on draft.

Bar Boulud, London offers breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, and an afternoon tea is even available between 3:30pm and 5:30pm. A full bistro menu, inspired by seasonal, rustic French cooking, includes signature dishes such as couq au vin, grilled Atlantic sea bass, braised rabbit ragout and truffled white sausage. The menu includes a selection of sausages, and a tasting option of three for those having trouble deciding which they prefer. Reflecting Chef Boulud’s New York influences, it also includes three signature “NY Burgers.” A prix fixe menu is available for 20 pounds everyday during specified hours.

A cocktail menu includes such local specialties as the gin-based London Sling or the Dr. Stormy (tea-infused cognac, lemon juice and ginger beer). Early risers can enjoy the restaurant’s continental breakfast of muffins, breads, fruits and cereals, or go for the full English Breakfast, which includes a selection of meats, fruits, and egg dishes.
