Fun with the Burns Brothers

Posted on 28 January 2010

With a diverse musical style that encompasses such genres as electronic, rock, orchestral and world music, award-winning composers Jeff & Greg Burns could accurately be described as the “modern man’s musicians.” They’ve composed for such projects as “Andy Richter Controls the Universe,” “Heist,” “Lucky,” “Life on a Stick,” “Listen Up!,” “Notorious C.H.O.,” Tony Hawk’s “Pro Skater,” Mattel’s
animated film series “Max Steel,” and for the last four years have provided the harmonic backdrop for CBS’ top-rated, investigative drama “NCIS” – currently enjoyed by some 20 million viewers each week.

1. What’s your favorite music?
This is a tough question! For the most part ALL music is our favorite
music. If you were scrolling thru our ipods you would find an
eclectic mix of music. Aimee Mann, Descendents, John Powell, Hans
Zimmer, Crystal Method, Bjork, Rush, The Beatles, The Police, Vinx,
Prince, XTC, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Bob Marley and Third World.

2. Why did you go into music?
There was something about music that just fascinated us when we were
young. It just “struck a chord” (pun intended). We started listening
to FM radio around 8 years old and just couldn’t get enough of it.
When we started playing guitar we thought to ourselves: “we can do
this!” so we started writing songs. Eventually, when we chose to
pursue music as a career, we found out that we “HAVE to do this.”
Music really became an extension of who we were then and are now.

3. When you want to get out of Los Angeles, where’s your favorite
escape destination?

Greg: I would have to say Aitutaki in the Cook Islands. The Cook
Islands are located in the South Pacific near Australia. The Islands
are surrounded by a reef which keeps the water around the islands
fairly shallow, warm and clear. It’s a long way away from the “hustle-
and-bustle” of the city.
Jeff: Taos, New Mexico. Taos is a small town in Northern New Mexico
and is relaxing and charming. I’ve been in both Summer and Winter. In
Summer you can walk around the small town and check out local Taos
Artists’ galleries, do hikes and eat amazing New Mexican food. In
winter you can snowboard at the ski valley and at night warm up near a
pinon wood fire.

4. What are your favorite restaurants in LA?
Greg: Cut on Wilshire. I had the best filet mignon there that I have
ever had – hands down. I also like Kushiyu on Ventura Blvd for Sushi.
Jeff: I like Pampas Grill in the Farmer’s Market on Fairfax.

5. What bars do you enjoy chilling at after a long day of work?
We stop in Lucy’s 51 in Toluca lake from time-to-time. Also had a
pint or two at Timmy Nolan’s Tavern.

6. Where are you favorite shopping destinations?
Ummm….music stores. LOL. Actually we found an amazing area in
Clairmont on Yale where there’s a big Rhino Records store and across
the street there the Folk Music Center. The Rhino is full of new and
used CD’s, DVDs, and vinyl records and the Folk Music Center has
incredible world instruments and acoustic instruments.

7. What kind of background music do you like set against eating in a
good restaurant?

We both like Bossa Nova so artists like Antonio Carlos Jobim, João
Gilberto, and Michael Franks would be cool.
